AW-101s - Quid Pro Quo?

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 27, 2012 The ghost of the adage, ‘You scratch my back, I scratch yours,’ continues to flutter in India’s corridors of power. Is it fact, imagination or  just a strange coincidence that the day the two Italian marines held for the killing of two fishermen off Kerala’s coast were allowed to ‘go home for Christmas’  even as two of the 12 ordered VVIPs AW101s flew to India? Wonder if the day will come when all those on bail are permitted to fly to Bangkok or the US to celebrate Diwali or Eid with their families? Suppose they miss their relatives too. Coming back to this issue, what in the blazes happened to defense minister A.K Antony ensuring the bribery- report that emanated in Italy on the procurement of the 12 helicopters was shared with the Indian government before it accepted delivery of the helicopters? Here at AerospaceDiary, we do feel that the government should put its foot down when OEMs create issues to derail procurements when rejected....

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 26, 2012 The recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India saw Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of Russian Technologies State Corporation, and Elcom Systems set up in India, a modern industrial facility for manufacturing of Russian helicopter models of the Ka- and Mi- brands. The joint venture will have the capacity to produce key helicopter units and carry out final assembly of the machines as well as engage in ground and flight testing. It is expected that the enterprise will start with production of components for the multirole Ka-226T helicopter. The enterprise will serve as an industrial base for hi-tech Russian rotorcraft products in India, we are informed. "India is a traditional partner of Russian Helicopters in terms of helicopter deliveries. The creation of a joint Russian-Indian enterprise marks a new stage and also a logical continuation of our joint efforts in light of the growing demand for Russian helicopter ...

EXCLUSIVE! OPINION -From Russia with Love

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 25, 2012 Even as India signs for 42 more Sukhoi 30-MKIs which will take the total in the IAF  inventory to 270  along with 100 Migs and    plans to add Fifth Gen fighters,  is raising eyebrows on whether the MMRCA will really take off in its present form. Maybe the French will sell us the 50 Rafales their air force cancelled? Who knows? And one wonders, who cares, except the military. Slowly but steadily, it seems pretty clear we are turning back to Russia for our arms procurement. At least it looks like that even as contracts like the MRTT and LUH lie in cold storage.  We are told the kitty is empty to pay for the first installment of the MMRCA. We are also told HAL needs to be clear what it can and cannot do. We are informed Dassault wants to deal with a private partner that in turn seems to have little inclination nor the resources to tap tier 2 and 3 business which may or may not be available as yet in the country. So where do...

Kudos Chief for caring!

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 22, 2012 Christmas came early this year for 20-year old Flight Cadet R K Herojit Singh, who met with a flying accident, leaving his limbs permanently damaged, when Santa Claus came in the form of the IAF Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne. Browne's request to the Defense Minister to grant Singh a commissioning after a six month training for ground duties, received special approval. Kudos Chief! In the season of caring and sharing, you have done both. The case is special, Aerospace Diary was told, as Herojit did not meet the medical norms for commissioning due to the spinal cord injuries, which left him paralysed waist downwards (Paraplegia), which occurred during his flying training, prior to his course completion and subsequent commission into the IAF.  We are happy to note that though presently hospitalized in MH Kirkee and mobile on a wheel chair, his intellectual and motor capabilities are fully intact. Dassault calendar goes retro - welcome back to the 60s!

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 21, 2012 Dassault’s 2013 Falcon Calendar has been especially designed around the upcoming celebration of Falcons' 50th Anniversary. For this, the company turned to Wilfrid Buch, a talented artist who used as his inspiration, a variety of 1960s design motifs. Calendar recipients will enjoy the series of vintage and avant-garde posters Buch created. In his mind, these are today's Falcons as they might have looked a half century ago.   The zany graphics, atypical fonts, psychedelic lines, improbable color blends are all evocative of a world the media labeled the "jet age".   “Yes, we admit to a healthy dose of nostalgia, as we conjure up the long path journeyed by our Falcons in five decades. And with Buch’s artistry, we acknowledge the strong value Dassault has always placed in creativity. And our obsession with pushing the limits, “ says Dassault.

Who said aviation Chiefs do not honor their bets or have a sense of humor?

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 20, 2012 Virgin Chief Richard Branson is a sport and even winner of the bet Tony Fernnades, acknowledges this. Branson, after losing a bet on F1, will wear a red skirt and serve as a stewardess on AirAsia in May. The two had agreed in 2010 that whichever of their teams (then Virgin and Lotus) finished lower in the constructors’ championship in their debut season, the losing owner would serve on the other’s airline. The tickets for the flight will be auctioned off for charity. Wouldn't we all love to be on that historical flight!

Train to nowhere- certainly not the airport!

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 20, 2012 Reliance and the government can squabble till the cows come home, but what about the aam aadmi (the common man)?     Urban development minister Kamal Nath informed the Lok Sabha the Delhi airport metro express will resume but at reduced speed of 80kmph, which is considered "safe." Really? Why was there no timeline given?  According to the ministry that had appointed Hong Kong Technical University for an analysis of the damaged clips, “no report has been submitted.” I don’t know what a clip is, but by the looks of it, I don’t want to be on a train that has the word “broken clips” attached to its reference! After missing several deadlines — starting with the run ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010, the prestigious Metro train service, which was started in February 2011, was suspended this July. Why do we keep doing this to ourselves, Why? Why?

Here goes- Thales wishes to make the following clarifications- - The EASA directives regard the removal of the conic plates that equip the AOA probes, they do not concern the probes themselves. - EASA has demanded the removal of the conic plates that protect the probes; the Agency has not demanded the removal of the Thales-manufactured probes themselves. - Thales supplies the AOA probes alone and is not responsible for the probe’s conic plates. - Contrary to initial assertions made by certain media articles, Thales is not the supplier of the probes equipped on the A330 of the Asian carrier, which experienced the event that caused the EASA to issue...

Pilot inhibited terrain warning system says report

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 18, 2012 Crashed Sukhoi Superjet Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee has completed the investigation of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 RRJ-95B aircraft, registered 97004 with flight number RA 3680, that crashed into Mount Salak, West Java in May killing 45. The inquiry finds the crew switched off the terrain-warning and was distracted by conversation, before hitting the mountain. The pilot of the Russian-made aircraft may have been distracted as he was talking to a potential customer, said Tatang Kurniadi, head of Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee. The pilot’s lack of familiarity with the West Java region and poor planning were other factors. The 90-seat SuperJet was carrying reporters and potential customers as part of a regional promotional tour. The report used information obtained from air traffic services transcripts, Indonesian National Search and Rescue (Basarnas) reports, flight records, the flight data recorder and the...

Opinion- (Not ours!) Shinde’s respect to militants

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 18, 2012 Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde deserves all compliments for giving utmost respect even to militants when in his Parliamentary reference he did not forget pre-fixing ‘Shri’ or ‘Mr’ before name of mastermind of infamous 26/11 Mumbai-attack namely Hafiz Saeed. It seems that ruling Congress has adopted such a policy when its leader Digvijaysingh used to call Osama-bin-laden as Osama ji. Pakistan authorities must welcome such unusual respect shown to their hard-core militant-citizens by responsible Indian leaders as a positive spirit of cordiality and friendship. Kingfisher awaits DGCA approval to fly

Image
Neelam Mathews Dec 17, 18, 2012 Even as the bad old 2012 nears an end, and Mr Mallya celebrates his birthday, followed by a new year bash and then the launch of the Kingfisher calendar, he has reason to celebrate-. “We will restart in a phased manner and will provide funding ourselves. We have not asked the Banks for any support. We have also shared a full recapitalization plan which will be further discussed with a small designated group of Bankers,” said a crisp statement from Kingfisher to Aerospace Diary this evening. No mention of how many aircraft- we hear it will be around 6 in “the first phase”. No mention of when they will take off- we suspect soon, since the carrier’s license expires end of this year. And though it is valid for 2 years after expiry, nobody will be in a hurry to renew it once it expires, we are told. No mention of how many staff will be retained. We hear they have not been informed. “Kingfisher is ready to infuse Rs 425 crore into the airline an...

All these aircraft are equipped with Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance Systems and Ground Proximity Warning Systems as anti-collision features. The total cost of procurement of these aircraft and the associated equipment is inclusive of the collision avoidance systems mentioned above.  IAF has decided that all aircraft to be procured by them in future will have anti-collision technologies incorporated in them. The type of equipment will depend on the role and operational employability of the aircraft. The US Government has requested to conduct search and recovery missions in the North East region to recover the remains of US service personnel presumed to have been killed in aircraft crashes in the region during World War II. So far, three such missions have be...
