AINONLINE by    NEELAM MATHEWS March 13, 2014, 12:29 PM Honeywell Aerospace signed agreements with two Indian airlines on the second day of the India Aviation show in Hyderabad. The first memorandum of understanding involves Air India agreeing to evaluate its SmartRunway/SmartLanding avionics system. The second was signed with GoAir, which has agreed to help with the development of the  EGTS  electric taxiing system jointly designed by Honeywell and Safran. Air India is joining more than a dozen other airlines using the SmartRunway/SmartLanding system, which uses  GPS  location information and airport and object data stored in Honeywell’s enhanced ground proximity warning system database to determine if the aircraft is configured properly for landing, taxiing and takeoff. It is also intended to reduce the risk of runway incursions. “As we expand our network, our pilots are required to fly into an ever-growing numbe...

U.S. Downgrades India’s Safety Oversight Rating

Image
AINONLINE by    GREGORY POLEK  and  NEELAM MATHEWS Air India flies Boeing 777-200LRs to the U.S., but can't add further service until India achieves a Category 1 safety rating. (Photo: Boeing) January 31, 2014, 11:51 AM The  U.S.  Federal Aviation Administration has downgraded its International Aviation Safety Assessment ( IASA ) program rating of India from a Category 1 to a Category 2 based on a recent reassessment of the country’s civil aviation authority. Under Category 2, India’s airlines can continue to fly existing service to the U.S., but they cannot establish any new service until the  FAA  reinstates the country’s Category 1 status. The ruling, announced on Friday, means that, in the  FAA ’s estimation, India’s civil aviation safety oversight regime does not comply with the international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ). The  FAA  a...

GoAir Blasts Air India Fare Scheme

News AWIN First Aug 30 , 2010 Neelam Mathews NEW DELHI Mumbai-based GoAir says Air India’s plans to reduce fares in September when the tourist season starts is counterproductive. “We don’t see (need) for Air India to reduce prices. We hope they realize this is not the right move. We will also have to pull down fares ... everybody will bleed ... unfortunate,” said GoAir CEO Kaushik Khona. The budget airline has eight Airbus A320s and plans to add two more by October. GoAir’s load factors were down in July and August, which are low peak months, said Khona. Air India is expected to reduce fares by about 10%, which many say might lead to a fare-war in a debt-laden industry that had just begun to pick up yields. However, Air India has been historically competitive in its fares. “It is a smart move [by Air India] to garner market share in the leisure market. Indians traditionally book holidays in advance for the last quarter of the year and Air India is tapping that market,” says ...
