Source: Neelam Mathews The second stage of the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) programme will begin in June 2015,  IHS Jane's  has learned. In total, 30 airfields are earmarked for modernisation in Phase 1 of MAFI and 25 in Phase 2, including facilities run by the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. Negotiations are underway to widen MAFI even further. First-batch of the Phase 1 work is already complete at six sites. The base at Gwalior in central India will be the first to be modernised under Batch 2, followed by Chandigarh in the north of the country. Tata Power's Strategic Electronics Division (SED) was awarded the USD196 million, 42-month contract to lead the first phase of MAFI in 2011. Posted by- Neelam Mathews July 7, 2011 Time:2:45am IST Northrop Grumman Corporation's Europe-based air traffic management subsidiary, Park Air Systems will provide a range of navigation equipment including Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and Doppler VHF Omni-directional Range Systems (DVOR) for air bases in India as part of the first phase of the Indian air force's Modernisation of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI) project.   The project is being implemented by the Indian air force to ensure its air fields are capable of handling all types of aircraft operated by the air force at all times, including modern jet fighters and military transport aircraft currently being acquired. When completed, the project will provide the airfields with modern air traffic management, navigation and landing systems, and meteorological and communications facilities. Aerospace Daily & Defense Report Feb 2, 2011 FUNDING & POLICY NEW DELHI — The first phase of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) $260 million program to modernize 30 airfields has been delayed eight months as it awaits final approval from India’s Cabinet Committee on Security. Bids for the Modernization of Airfields of India (MAFI) project were received in 2008, with Raytheon and Tata’s Power Strategic Electronics Division being selected. Cabinet approval is the final step before the contracts can be awarded. The 30 airfields are to be modernized within three years of the contract signatures. The IAF wants the western sector to be given urgent attention, since its airfields are considered the most important, according to Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik. “Central and south Indian airfields can be done later,” he tells Aviation Week.
