Neelam Mathews, Delhi  - IHS Jane's Airport Review 21 January 2019 Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), operator of Kempegowda International Airport, has embarked on a USD2 billion expansion programme that includes a new 255,650 m  2   Terminal 2 (T2) and a second 4,000 m-long runway. Architects for the first phase of the T2 project are Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Turner Construction Company in support for project engineering. Indian company Larsen & Toubro is leading the construction effort, and in October 2018 it began work on the new south parallel runway, apron, and associated airfield infrastructure. A new air traffic control tower is not required. BIAL plans to complete the second runway by September 2019, with the terminal to follow by March 2021. “BIAL works with some of the best brains in the industry – from across the globe – to ensure that projects are of the best quality as well as delivered on time,” a spokesman for the...

IATA Rebukes India on CORSIA Snub

Image
by  Neelam Mathews     January 21, 2019, 10:59 AM IATA director general Alexandre de Juniac. (Photo: IATA) India’s refusal to join the International Air Transport Association-led Carbon Offsetting and Reporting Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) has led to surprise and consternation within the global trade group, IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac told  AIN . “I would like India to join CORSIA, but frankly for the moment, I do not see things moving and do not expect it to during the election period,” he lamented.   De Juniac’s comments referred to India’s federal elections scheduled from April to May this year, followed by state elections set to continue until the end of the year. “It was a great surprise to us that India did not join CORSIA given it was part of the Paris climate change agreement,” added De Juniac. Starting on a voluntary basis from January 2021, CORSIA's pilot phase requires r...

India Imposes New Measures on Pratt-powered A320neos

by Neelam Mathews January 18/21  2019, 1:30 PM Reacting to a recent incident of smoke in the cabin of an Indigo Airbus A320neo fitted with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Thursday put into place “additional measures...for immediate compliance by Interglobe Aviation Ltd. (Indigo) and Go Air for identifying and correcting impending failures in dry face seals and LPT (low-pressure turbines).” The DGCA has ruled the operators must carry out weekly inspections of third-stage LPT blades. For newer engines, it requires boroscope inspection at first oil filter change and “at next opportunity or A-Check, whichever is earlier,” for engines that already underwent their first oil filter change and have accumulated less than 1000 flight hours. The regulator also has recommended an awareness program for cabin and cockpit crew on odor and smoke during the approach phase of flight. The notice came within nine days of an interaction amo...

What’s all this about Pratt and Whitney Main Gear Box?

Neelam Mathews With over 13,000 large commercial engines installed , Pratt & Whitney is no amateur to this business. So lets cut some flak. The GTF engine is a class by its one and as a Head of Engineering of a major airline told aerospacediary: “ Technology such as this takes some time to get off ground.” He added: “Remember the battery issue in the 787s? Now we hardly talk about it.” Even the aviation ministry said recently in-flight shutdown cases in A320neos in India are less than global average but it would do a comparable study to assess the timeline of teething issues in new engines. So, at a meeting at the ministry when senior aviation ministry officials met with their stakeholders to discuss the GTF performance of the A320neos, the only issue and status to be give by Pratt was regarding the main gearbox and status of root cause analysis. Pratt has said work is on and will be submitted to the DGCA in a few weeks. Secretary Choubey confirmed Pratt is working...

Mumbai Summit Highlights India’s Challenges, Potential

Neelam Mathews Jan 17, 2019 A s aviation infrastructure development lags behind India’s highly competitive and rapidly growing aviation market, the industry is getting a positive response from the international community looking for opportunities to invest in ground, air, and space infrastructure. Such feedback proved particularly evident at the first Global Aviation Summit in Mumbai on January 15 and 16, attended by a mix of more than 1,200 participants from 80 countries, including the chiefs of the International Air Transport Association, the International Civil Aviation Organization, and Airports Council International. “In order for India cope with surging demand in air transport, a clear plan for building critical aviation infrastructure is required,” said Angela Gittens, director general of Airports Council International (ACI) World. “With that in mind, it is good to see that the Indian government has moved to undertake a second phase of privatization.” Gittens’ call...
