Indian Growth Rates To Slow as Airlines Cut Capacity

by  Neelam Mathews  -  March 19, 2019, 8:11 AM With airline seating capacity throughout India down about 20 percent from its peak, the country appears set to lose its standing as the world’s lowest-airfare market. About 100 airliners now sit grounded or out of service, suggesting the aviation sector will almost certainly not see the near 19 percent growth many forecasters projected for this year.   The March 10 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max crash near Addis Ababa prompted Indian authorities to ground some 13 Max jets flown by SpiceJet and five by cash-strained Jet Airways, an airline that already had grounded 56 airplanes due to financial troubles. Others include GoAir, nine of whose Airbus A320neos await engine spares; Air India, which has grounded 17 airplanes for similar reasons; and IndiGo, which has taken out of service 10 airplanes and cut some 100 flights a day due to a pilot shortage.  “Capacity reduction is likely to see annual gro...

The LCA received its FOC last month during the Aero India show in Bangalore, for induction into the Indian Air Force as a fully weaponized fighter. Following the major Vayu Shakti Air Force exercise in February, the Chief of the IAF, Air Marshal B.S. Dhanoa, reported, “It is a fighter jet and behaved like a fighter. It did well both in air-to-air combat, as well as air-to-ground combat.”   HAL has been waiting for the past six months to receive an order ...

Top 50 Women in Engineering (WE50)

Image
The  Women’s Engineering Society  (WES) has announced the fourth iteration of the Top 50 Women in Engineering (WE50) campaign in 2019. Building on the success of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 campaigns, WES is looking to increase the reach, profile and engagement to encourage young women into engineering. WES is delighted to be launching the theme for the 2019 Top 50 Women in Engineering in Apprenticeships Week, as this year’s Top 50 Women in Engineering will be  Current or Former Apprentices . Once again, the competition will follow a public nominations process from which the top 50 will be selected. While women make up around 14% of engineers in the UK, just over 7% of engineering apprentices are female. By selecting the Top 50 Women in Engineering: Current or Former Apprentices  as its theme for 2019, WES aims to highlight the terrific opportunities that engineering apprenticeships offer women. Engineering Apprenticeships provide an alternative route to a care...

Jet Airways’ Future Hinges on Bank Debt Settlement

Neelam Mathews March 7, 2019 Embroiled in a quagmire of losses resulting in the grounding of 42 of its 114-aircraft fleet and the cancelation of some 200 flights a day, India’s Jet Airways faces a bleak future should stakeholders not accept a resolution plan to convert mounting debt into equity. The airline owes more than $1.25 billion, $300 million of which came from government-owned State Bank of India (SBI). The approval of the bank-led provisional resolution plan “is an important step” toward saving the country’s oldest private carrier, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal indicated in a statement late last month. Jet Airways vendors have called a meeting on March 11 with the carrier and representatives from minority shareholder Etihad Airways to ascertain and decide the way forward. “It is hard to say if there will be closure,” an airline official told  AIN . “The situation is very critical and any further delay will create challenges for Jet,” said CAPA Centre for Avia...

Beriev, Indian Airlines in Be-200 Talks

Image
by  Neelam Mathews Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation-owned Beriev has begun negotiating the sale of Be-200 amphibians with Indian regional airlines. The development follows the inclusion of seaplanes under the recently announced third phase of India’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), which allows seaplanes to serve 18 routes. The seaplane operations would add more than 100,000 seats. The RCS provides initiatives for aircraft operators to connect underserved and remote airports. Initially designed for fire extinguishing, the Be-200 flies to a range of 1,780 nm and can land on the ground, ice-covered airfields, and on water. Beriev has now begun a program to re-engine the amphibian with PowerJet SaM146 turbofans built by a joint venture between Russia’s NPO Saturn and France’s Snecma. The new engine will increase its operational ceiling to 33,000 feet and improve fuel efficiency by 17 percent compared with its present Ukrainian D-436TPs. “This is a uniq...
