Neelam Mathews Dec 16, 2012 China might purchase 24 Su-35s, an updated version of the fourth generation Su-27, for $1.5 billion, repords scmp. It says the deal was first proposed by Moscow two years ago. The deal "indicates the technological hurdles China faces in developing its own J-20, especially in terms of engine technology, military analysts say," says the publication. The aircraft could be equipped with NPO Saturn's 117S engine.   Moscow's  Vedomosti  business daily quoted an official who said China was initially interested in purchasing only four Su-35s  but that was rejected by Russia that was expecting to sell 48.  It is believed China was asked to sign an agreement that stated the aircraft would not be copied!  President of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Mikhail Pogosyan was quoted in November saying: " The Chinese are showing interest in this jet. The engine maker has offered a variant of the Shakti engine for the LUH. “Most of the development is behind us. The first prototype depends on the final specifications HAL will freeze. (For us to work on), it will take less time than a full scale (design),” Philippe Couteaux, VP and GM Airframers, told Aerospace Diary. “The engine variant offered (by Turbomeca) meets LUH engine requirements,” added Couteaux. Turbomeca is celebrating 50 years of the Chetak (Alouette III airframe) originally powered by Turbomeca's Artouste IIIB engine.
