Government sources tell Aerospace Diary the much awaited Bharat Electronics Ltd- Thales joint venture will be signed on August 29 in Bangalore. If all goes well.

The JV will initially deal with radars in the military air defense domain though not exclusively in future. A unit will be set up to manufacture components in India. It is believed Thales that will be a 26% shareholder (as present rules allow) will bring in transfer of technology. The company’s main strengths are in systems engineering, integration and testing. BEL, a major player in the field, has a history of manufacturing radar for the military.

By the looks of it, the JV could provide a conduit for offsets not just for Thales but also for its competitors.

Recently Thales announced at Eurosatory that it had consolidated its air defense activities into five distinct business lines - Skyview, Ground, Control, Rapid and Star.

During Defexpo this year, the Thales group demonstrated its capabilities in Global Air Defense Solutions, Force Protection, Missile Systems and Rocket Systems by showcasing:
  • SHIKRA 60:  the tactical C2  to ensure a complete airspace surveillance of up to a range of 80 km and heterogeneous weapon systems coordination
  • ADES: the ultimate all-in-one mobile Short Range Air Defense system
  • Gun System: the latest generation Air defense Gun to defeat emerging low-cost targets
  • SAMP/T: the European, in-service, Medium Range Air & Missile Defense solution
  • LMM:  the new family of Lightweight Multi-Role Missiles
  • Laser Guided Rocket in 70mm calibre
