According to news sources, a
French Gazelle helicopter pilot from 4RHC based at Pau, got killed during a
raid in Mali. The raid was part of the intervention of French forces in
the Mali conflict to repel rebels occupying the north of the country. The name
of this operation is Serval, after an an African wild cat.
The French intervention
began in the afternoon of 11 January by a helicopter raid in the region Konna,
near Mopti in the center of the country.
Air
strikes began in the areas where the fighters operate,led by French forces in
Chad, where France has Mirage 2000s stationed.
