EC signals ASEAN talks

Airports

08 June 2016

As Gulf carriers continue their expansion in Europe and Asia, the European Commission (EC) on 7 June sought permission from the Council of Ministers to negotiate an aviation agreement between the European Union and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
This followed a Joint Declaration on Aviation Cooperation in 2014 between the EU and ASEAN.
If negotiations bear fruit, this would be the first-ever bloc-to-bloc aviation agreement, covering 1.1 billion people. The agreement would result in more direct flights between the EU and ASEAN, and the EU estimates economic benefits (in terms of trade and tourism) of USD9 billion in the first six years.
