EXCLUSIVE! Ground Handling – Compromise on cards?

For those of us who may recall the animosity following the announcement of the new domestic ground handling policy between the handlers and airports on one side and the airlines on the other, hope is on hand as the final decision will be given by the Supreme Court in July. And there is no turning back.

Aerospace Diary learns a compromise might be struck with the airlines being allowed to handle the passenger side while the ground handlers will handle the ramp side. This should please the airports that have often complained about congestion on the ramp.

One suspects airlines such as IndiGo may not be very satisfied with this decision as they say costs will soar by five to six times. Ground handlers, on the other hand, say their upgraded technology gives a value-add provided they get volumes. So, should this go through, they will have little to complain.

Which only goes to show an aviation policy that is still being pickled by bureaucrats needs to be released for everybody to get a taste of it.

  1. The piecemeal approach towards the comprehensive civil aviation policy is to blame for most of the ambiguities and overlapping decisions. The ministry should for once and for all come up with a proper policy document in consultation with AERA and other stake holders.
