Did you see the MC 21.....I'm floored!

The Russians are breaking past myths about their lack of interest in customer care and design. In the past as long as the equipment worked and was hardy, design had no place in civil planes.

I was fortunate enough to be shown the mockup at the Hyderabad show and wow, seriously think if the marketing is right, this is going to give the OEMs some serious sleepless nights. By the way, Lufthansa Consulting has been appointed by Irkut to do marketing for the MC-21 that has over 75% western suppliers including avionics and engines.

One enters the aircraft and its all about space. Look at the bins on top and they are digital and designed for short people like me. Gone will be the days of looking feverishly around for a tall well built passenger to ask if he could help stack my trolley in a bin designed for those above 6ft tall!

The fuselage is much larger giving more space for even the well endowed to pass through as the food is distributed. The economy feels close to premium as a result of more space.

The MC 21 is all about good design. Think they got it right this time. Sorry for swooning- but is wasn't just the lack of sleep during the show days!

  1. Yes indeed it was good to visit the mock of UAC Irkut's MC-21. Very well placed seats and the galley inserts which gives an overall impression of space being majorly taken care of. Its good for their globalizing outlook for having used Zodiac Aerospace seats and TIA galley Inserts. Apart from Interiors the -300 has a capacity of 160-211 pax depending on the choice of pitch by the operator. Also a good competitive range and cost reduction on fuel burn with the operating cost matching with the next gen operating engine variants. With powerplant PW1400G and PD14 gives it the real position into the market of Boeing and Airbus where the operators would have choice beyond that. With its less noise and more fuel efficient technology it would be a real like for operators with LCC model of operations yet with a comfortable passenger interior. With wider aisle it would reduce 30 percent transit time, giving some extra hours of operation benefit for the operator.
Yes now it is all about marketing the product before it hits the service in 2016.

  2. As an airline executive, i see good potential for the MC-21. It is an economy passenger's dream and will allow airlines to further segment the economy class into premium economy and general economy. The sheer headroom, legroom, elbowroom and overhead luggage space is incredible. If Irkut can back up its product with good after sale support, then airlines will look at it as an alternative to Airbus or Boeing. Capt. A.K.Singla, Jet Airways
